10 Female Written Sci Fi & Fantasy Books To Read In 2021

When I first started my novel I didn’t think there were a lot of female science fiction authors, so I was pleasantly surprised to find there’s a whole bunch of us out there.

In saying that I’m sure you can guess what I’m going to say next… I’ve never actually knowingly read a science fiction book from a female author!

Since I now know I have some catching up to do I’ve decided to pick out some female authored sci fi books to read that have been released this year. Here are the ones I’m going to be reading and hopefully you’ll find something that interests you as well.

The Light of Midnight Stars by Rena Rossner

This book is about three Jewish sisters who have different powers. After a mostly peaceful childhood they are forced to harness their powers to save their village against the darkness that is spreading through the country.

She also has another similar Fantasy / Magic type book out if you click on her name on the Amazon page.

Machinehood by S B Divya

Divya has written a ton of novels her latest is set in a future where humans have to compete against machines for jobs. In order to help them compete with superior machines, the government supplies humans with a pill to enhance their abilities.

A terrorist group however attacks a prominent figure and demands that no more pills should be given to humans.

Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

A love story infused with Greek mythology. It tells a tale of a princess her betrays her family to escape her kingdom with a prince who wants to kill her brother.

Sun-Daughters, Sea-Daughters by Aimee Ogden

The space opera genre mixed with my favourite fairytale The Little Mermaid. As humanity has spread across the galaxy they have had to adapt to different environments, which they’ve accomplished due to editing their genes.

A girl who grew up in the sea falls in love with a land person and causes tensions amongst the two clans. When her husband and his people fall ill her only hope is to get in touch with her ex partner, who lives on a different world.

Black Water Sister by Zen Cho

This one caught my eye because its set in Malaysia, a place I called home for 6 months in 2018.

In this story a girl moves to Malaysia with her parents (where she was born) and starts talking to her dead grandma. Not only that her grandma has beef with a local business man and is compelling her to help right some wrongs, whether she wants to or not.

Blade of Secrets by Tricia Levenseller

18 year old Ziva has a gift of making weapons that have magical powers, a hobby she escapes into to avoid the outside world.

One day a powerful man requests a special type of sword that will reveal the secrets of those he uses it on. But as Ziva realises that he intends to take over the world with this sword her and her sister go on the run to keep it from him.

Dead Space by Kali Wallace

Hester’s well planned life well apart due to a terrorist attack that limited her potential. She since has been forced to work a dead end security job in the middle of nowhere, for a boss that only really cares about profit.

A fellow victim gets in contact and starts to provide information on just what happened on that fateful day, but it murdered before they can explain it to Hester. This leads her to follow a mystery that involves not only the people who hurt her, but also the very space station she’s on.

The End of Men by Christina Sweeney-Baird

I can’t be the only one who has temporarily dreamed about a world without me after a break up can I? Well Christina has written a story just about that. Its a dystopian future where men have been wiped out by a virus.

The story follows the views of different women as they seek to understand and find a cure for what happened. It explores what a world without men would truly look like and what that would mean for humanity.

This seems to be her first book and it shares similar themes to my upcoming novel about a virus. I’ll have to hold of reading this one until after I’ve done with my book, but I’m excited to check it out afterwards. Find it here.

Star Eater by Kersten Hall

This one reminds me a little of the Handmaids Tale so that’s why it initially caught my eye.

It’s about a woman who is meant to uphold a prestigious bloodline, but she really doesn’t want to. She doesn’t want to have a baby and she’s doing everything she can to avoid it.

When a mysterious faction asks her to be their spy she leaps at the chance, seeing it as a way to escape her destiny.

The Infinity Courts by Akemy Dawn Bowmen
